Transforming Traffic Safety: The 4th Street Roundabout in West Reno
In West Reno, 4th Street has long been notorious for its high-speed traffic, making it particularly difficult for motorists to enter from Woodland Avenue and Mesa Park Road. The area was prone to severe crashes, prompting the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) to take action. The solution? A roundabout designed to slow down traffic and improve safety.
Why a Roundabout?
Roundabouts are well-regarded for their ability to calm traffic and reduce accident rates. Statistically, roundabouts lead to 30% fewer accidents, and when incidents do occur, they tend to be less severe. The new 4th Street roundabout has successfully created safe gaps for vehicles entering from Woodland and Mesa Park, significantly enhancing overall safety.
Enhanced Features for Safety and Aesthetics
The improvements didn’t stop at traffic flow. The project also introduced an eight-foot multi-use path and crosswalks, making the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The roundabout’s design included aesthetic upgrades, ensuring it not only functions well but also adds to the visual appeal of the community.
Geotechnical and Construction Insights
From a geotechnical standpoint, the project involved extensive roadway excavation and embankment, along with landscaping and irrigation modifications. Key elements included a plantmix bituminous surface, curb and gutter installations, sidewalks, driveways, cross gutters, medians, and concrete barrier rails.
The Geotechnical & Environmental Services, Inc. (GES) team evaluated the subsurface conditions along the project alignments, provided laboratory testing to classify the soils encountered, and offered recommendations on the existing asphalt concrete pavement sections. Despite extended inclement weather causing delays, and challenging subgrade conditions necessitating significant over-excavation and soil stabilization, the construction team persevered.
Overcoming Challenges
The project’s timeline was impacted by adverse weather and poor soil conditions, requiring a condensed schedule. This was achieved by closing the roadway and extending work hours to keep the project on track.
Project Excellence
Designed by Kimley Horn and constructed by Sierra Nevada Construction, the 4th Street roundabout project has been recognized for its excellence, earning the prestigious Project of the Year award from the American Public Works Association.
The 4th Street roundabout stands as a testament to innovative design and effective project management, delivering enhanced safety, improved traffic flow, and added aesthetic value to the community. GES is proud to have been part of this important project in Washoe County.
