In the construction industry, time is money – if a project can save time, then a project can save money. For example, if one boring can be drilled to conduct both a geotechnical and an environmental investigation, the savings in drilling expenses is likely to be significant. GES recently worked with a utility client on a project that needed to install a large replacement water main within a public right-of-way. The client knew a geotechnical investigation was necessary but was also concerned with the large number of gas stations located adjacent to the right-of-way. GES was able to perform an investigation using our sister company, Eagle Drilling Services, that positioned the exploratory borings in locations where representative geotechnical and environmental sampling could be performed simultaneously. The results were not only pertinent to each investigation, but the client was able to save a significant amount of time and money.
Similarly, in another corner of Nevada, a contractor was building a new retail property on a parcel of land that had known impacts from a former petroleum spill. The site required the contractor to follow a site-specific Soil Management Plan during earthwork operations. The owner incorporated environmental oversight into the construction process, saving time and money, while ensuring the project was compliant with the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP) guidelines.
The utilization of concurrent operations is uncommon in the construction industry. Usually, it is typical for each part of the process to be performed sequentially, wasting clients’ money and time.
