GES is providing services for a significant project for the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), focusing on the replacement of the existing avalanche control system with a new and improved GAZEX system. Back in 1992, NDOT installed a remote-controlled avalanche system that’s located next to the summit of the Mt. Rose Highway. This helps reduce the risk of avalanches when the road is open to the public. When there’s heavy snowfall, NDOT stops traffic and uses the system, which releases the loose snow toward the highway. Plow crews clear the snow, and then reopen the route. This project involved a comprehensive set of tasks, from demolition to installation, ensuring that the new system operates efficiently and effectively.

Project Scope and Execution
Located on Mount Rose Highway in Reno Nevada, the GAZEX project consisted of removing and replacing the existing avalanche control system. This intricate project included the following tasks:

  • Demolition and Removal: The first phase involved the careful demolition and removal of the old avalanche control system. This included salvaging usable equipment for potential future use.
  • Trenching and Installation: Extensive trenching was conducted to lay down new conduits essential for the system. This step was crucial for housing the new electrical and communication lines.
  • Concrete Pad and Building Construction: New concrete pads and a building to house the avalanche was constructed.
  • Electrical and Solar Installations: The new system required advanced electrical connections, supported by solar panels and batteries, to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
  • Communication Equipment and Testing: Installation of new communication equipment was followed by rigorous testing to guarantee reliable and efficient operation.

GES’ Role and Contributions
GES played a vital role throughout the project, providing specialized services and ensuring quality and compliance at every stage:

  • Material Testing and Special Inspections: During the demolition of the existing building and construction of the new facility, GES provided material testers and special inspectors. This included density and moisture testing during subgrade preparation, aggregate base placement, and trench backfill associated with building footings, utility trenches, and the concrete slab-on-grade.
  • Daily Inspections and Documentation: GES conducted daily inspections to document project progress, verify quantities placed, and schedule upcoming work. Any changes or field issues were promptly communicated to the owner to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Structural Inspections: The project demanded special inspections of reinforcing steel for all reinforced concrete footings and slab-on-grade, masonry building reinforcement, structural masonry, structural steel and welding, and post-installed epoxy anchors. GES’s expertise in these areas ensured that all structural elements met the highest standards.

Project Completion and Reporting
The project is nearing completion and at that time GES will prepare a comprehensive final report summarizing all daily field and special inspection reports, as well as lab results. This detailed documentation will be submitted to the client for approval, ensuring full transparency and satisfaction.
When completed, the GAZEX project for NDOT will be a testament to GES’ commitment to excellence and their capability to handle complex projects with precision and efficiency. This project not only enhances the safety and reliability of NDOT’s avalanche control system but also showcases GES’s expertise in delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

“ln August 2023, GES was selected and requested to perform inspection, testing, and quality control services for NDOT for the demolition and replacement of an important critical highway safety project:  The GAZEX Avalanche Control Safety Project on Mt. Rose Highway (SR 431).  This project was at an elevation over 9000 feet; it had tremendous logistical, technical, environmental, and construction issues where GES and its staff rose to the level of effort required to perform in an outstanding professional manner.  GES remained flexible and professional with a “can-do” work ethic to be a key and integral component for the success of this GAZEX project.  GES’ staff has been outstanding.

It is with sincere pleasure that I can state my gratitude regarding the inspection services provided and performed by GES, Inc.”
